Chilla

Game viewing can be experienced at its best in the Chilla Wildlife Sanctuary. The region is open to visitors and abounds in wildlife as well as vegetation. The location of the sanctuary on the eastern bank of River Ganges adds much charm to it. The wildlife sanctuary expands over an area of 240 sq km. So, as you undertake a safari into the jungles of Chilla Sanctuary, you will not only watch a variety of animal species at close quarters but will also soak up scenic views of the Ganges and the northern Himalayas. Though Indian Elephant is the major attraction here, there are a number of other wildlife species to be seen.

Chilla

Travelers can hire elephants at Chilla Proper. These domesticated elephants prove to be the best option for game viewing round around the park. Elephant safaris inside the park can be enjoyed in early mornings and evenings. The mahout will not only carry you through the park but will also feed you with interesting tidbits of wildlife travel. It is truly a wonderful experience as the elephant takes you clumsily through bamboo thickets and elephant grass.

A good option to watch the wildlife of the park is from watchtowers, located over waterholes. Animals frequent these waterholes throughout the day. Not only animals, a variety of bird species has also find a shelter in the sanctuary. Spotted deer are fairly distributed throughout the park. You will see herds of spotted deer every now and then during your safari. Other animals to be spotted in the Chilla Sanctuary include Asian Elephant, Tigers, Leopards, Jungle Cat, The Goat-like Goral, Himalayan Yellow-Throated Marten, Indian Hare, Sloth Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, King Cobra, Jackal, Barking Deer, Sambhar, Wild Boar, Rhesus Macaque, Indian Langur, Indian Porcupine, Monitor Lizard, Python etc.

Birds that you can watch at the waterholes and other places are quails, hornbills, hawks, falcons and vultures among others. Visitors can also indulge in fishing in the park. However, you need to get permission beforehand.
